Capital One Miles: what they are worth and where they transfer
Capital One miles are a bank currency despite the name - they are not an airline's miles until you transfer them. Both routes we have verified move at 1:1 with a minimum transfer amount attached.

The name causes confusion
Calling them "miles" invites people to treat them like airline miles, which they are not. They are a transferable bank currency, in the same category as Membership Rewards and Ultimate Rewards. Nothing about them is tied to a specific airline until you make it so.
The practical consequence is the same as for every currency on this site: the balance is worth what you eventually turn it into, and the decision about what that is stays open until you transfer.
Minimum transfer amounts
Both routes we have verified carry a minimum. Below it, the transfer simply is not offered - so a small balance may not be movable at all, even though the ratio is a clean 1:1.
That is worth knowing before you build a plan around a partial balance. The minimum is shown in the table above and enforced by the transfer calculator, which warns you rather than quietly calculating an amount you could not actually transfer.
How to think about the balance
The reference value at the top of this page describes what these miles tend to be worth when redeemed for travel, averaged across many bookings. It is not a rate you can demand, and it is not a cash-out value.
Most programs offer some way to take value in cash or as a credit against a travel purchase, usually at a rate well below the transfer path. That option has real merit when the alternative is a poor redemption - a predictable low rate can beat an unpredictable one - but it is a different decision, and it should be made with the numbers in front of you rather than by default.
A worked example
Suppose a long-haul business-class fare is selling for $2,900, and a partner program will sell the same seat for 75,000 miles plus $95 in taxes. This is the shape of redemption where transferable currencies earn their reputation.
($2,900.00 cash − $95.00 award fees) ÷ 75,000 points × 100 = 3.74 cents per point
Comfortably above the reference value. The honest caveat is the one the math cannot supply: this only holds if you would genuinely have paid $2,900 for that seat. If you would have flown economy for $700, the real comparison is against $700, and the redemption looks very different.
Against the current reference value of 2.07 cents, that is about 181% of typical - what we label strong relative value. Those bands are our own editorial rules, not an industry standard.

Capital One credit card rewards, including miles, do not expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing.

Transfers are one-way Find and confirm the award seat first, inside the destination program. Only then move your points. Once they leave Capital One Miles they are the destination program's currency, subject to its rules and its future devaluations.
Check the minimum and the increment before you commit to an amount - the number you wanted may not be a valid transfer. And remember that transfers are not always instant, so never transfer against a deadline assuming they will be. The transfer calculator flags all three.
Good and poor uses
Broad principles, not promises about specific inventory. What is actually available on your dates is something only the booking program can tell you.
Generally works well
- Long-haul premium cabins, where the gap between cash fare and award price is widest.
- Partner awards priced on a chart rather than against the cash fare.
- Balances large enough to clear the minimum transfer comfortably.
Usually poor value
- Balances too small to meet a route minimum - check before planning around them.
- Domestic economy fares under a few hundred dollars.
- Transferring before confirming award availability.

Are Capital One miles the same as airline miles?
No. They are a transferable bank currency. They become airline miles only when you transfer them to a partner program, and that transfer is one-way.
Why can I not transfer a small balance?
Because the routes we have verified carry a minimum transfer amount. Below that threshold the transfer is not offered at all. The minimums are listed in the table above.
Can I use these miles to erase a travel purchase instead?
We have not verified Capital One's current fixed-value redemption terms, so we will not quote a rate. The general principle holds: a fixed-value option usually pays less per mile than a good transfer redemption and more than a bad one. Price both before deciding.
