What a high reference value actually means
Reference values are built from what people actually got across a large sample of real bookings. A programme scores highly when its best redemptions are very good and enough people find them.
That is a survivorship-shaped statistic. The average reflects the redemptions people made and reported, which skew toward the ones worth making. It does not tell you how easy those redemptions are to find, how much award space exists, or whether any of it is available on your dates.
So treat the figure at the top of this page as evidence that the programme has a strong high end - not as an expectation for an arbitrary booking. The redemption in front of you is worth exactly what its own arithmetic says.
No alliance, and no verified way in
Virgin Atlantic is not a member of one of the three global alliances. It runs its own partnerships instead, which we have not verified and therefore do not list.
We also hold no verified transfer route into Flying Club from any of the six bank currencies we cover. Flying Club is a well-known transfer destination and we would expect routes to exist; the absence reflects our verification work rather than the programme.
Nor have we confirmed the expiry policy. Between those three gaps, this guide is more about how to think than about what to do - and we would rather be plainly incomplete than quietly speculative.

A worked example
Suppose a premium-cabin fare is selling for $2,400 and an award is 47,500 points plus $340 in taxes and surcharges.
($2,400.00 cash − $340.00 award fees) ÷ 47,500 points × 100 = 4.34 cents per point
The kind of redemption that gives a programme a high average - and note the honest caveat the math cannot supply: this only holds if you would genuinely have paid $2,400. Against the $700 economy fare you might otherwise have booked, the same award looks very different.
Against the current reference value of 3.47 cents, that is about 125% of typical — what we label around typical value. Those bands are our own editorial rules, not an industry standard.
How this programme prices awards
We have not verified this Airlines rarely state their award pricing model in writing, and we are not going to record an inference as a sourced fact. Whether Virgin Atlantic Flying Club prices awards from a chart or against the cash fare is something you can test yourself: price the same route at several different cash fares and see whether the miles price moves with them. Virgin Atlantic sets no time limit on redeeming Virgin Points, provided you remain a member of the Flying Club programme and comply with its terms.
