How much are Air Canada Aeroplan miles worth?
Aeroplan is the most reachable programme we cover: four of the six bank currencies transfer into it in our verified data. That makes it the default destination for a lot of transferable points, and the one worth understanding even if you never fly Air Canada.

Four ways in, which is unusual
Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt all reach Aeroplan in our verified data. No other programme on this site comes close to that coverage, and it is the practical reason Aeroplan shows up so often in transferable-points advice.
Being reachable from four currencies means most people holding bank points can get here, which makes it a useful programme to be able to price even if it is not where you were planning to book.
The Star Alliance angle
Aeroplan is a Star Alliance programme, which is what makes it a route to airlines your own points cannot reach directly. Our path finder uses exactly this: Amex has no direct route to United, but it does reach Aeroplan, and Aeroplan can book eligible United partner award space.
The caveat is the one that applies to every partner booking. Airlines release less award space to partners than they sell their own members, so seeing a seat on the operating airline's website does not mean it is bookable with Aeroplan points. How partner awards work covers why.
Expiry is paused, for now
The expiry section below carries something unusual: the ordinary inactivity rule is currently suspended, with an end date. That is genuinely useful to know, and it is also the kind of fact that becomes wrong on a specific day.
We have noted internally to re-check it when the pause lifts. If you are reading this after that date, treat the statement below as needing verification rather than current.
A worked example
Suppose a long-haul fare is selling for $1,180 and a partner award is 60,000 points plus $88 in taxes and carrier charges.
($1,180.00 cash − $88.00 award fees) ÷ 60,000 points × 100 = 1.82 cents per point
A good result, and representative of why Aeroplan attracts transferable points. Note how much work the $88 does not do here - on some carriers the equivalent charge runs several times higher and changes the conclusion entirely, which is why the calculator asks for it separately.
Against the current reference value of 1.86 cents, that is about 98% of typical — what we label around typical value. Those bands are our own editorial rules, not an industry standard.
How this programme prices awards
We have not verified this Airlines rarely state their award pricing model in writing, and we are not going to record an inference as a sourced fact. Whether Air Canada Aeroplan prices awards from a chart or against the cash fare is something you can test yourself: price the same route at several different cash fares and see whether the miles price moves with them. Do these miles expire?
Aeroplan points expire only if your account has been inactive for 18 months. Expiry is currently paused until 30 November 2026, so nothing expires before then.

Generally works well
- Partner awards on Star Alliance carriers your own points cannot reach directly.
- Long-haul redemptions where the cash fare is high relative to the points price.
- Consolidating from any of the four bank currencies that reach it, once you have found the award.
Usually poor value
- Transferring in before confirming partner award space, which is a smaller pool than the operating airline sells its own members.
- Short, cheap flights where the cents-per-point figure will be poor.
- Assuming the current expiry pause is permanent.

Which bank points transfer to Aeroplan?
Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt in our verified data - more than any other programme we cover. The exact ratios and the dates we confirmed them are in the table above.
Can I book United flights with Aeroplan points?
Both are Star Alliance members, so eligible United partner award space can sometimes be booked through Aeroplan. Availability and pricing are set by that partner relationship, not by United's own award inventory, and we cannot tell you whether a seat exists on your dates.
Do Aeroplan points expire?
There is an inactivity rule, but it is currently paused - see the expiry section above for the confirmed wording and the date the pause ends.
Is Aeroplan the best place to send my points?
It is the most reachable, which is not the same thing. The right destination is whichever programme can book the specific award you want at the best price. Check the path finder first.
